BRITAIN’S ‘BEST HOME’ FEATURES SARNAFIL ROOFING SYSTEM

The prize for Britain’s best modern home has been awarded to a project that features a Sarnafil single ply roofing system.

The Manser Medal 2011 – a prestigious annual prize awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for one-of-a-kind contemporary houses that demonstrate exceptional design – was given to a 1960s concrete-block building in north London’s Highgate recently.

The Hampstead Lane house’s architect owners transformed the stark, exposed concrete building – which had previously been earmarked for demolition – with the help of Duggan Morris Architects and main contractor ME Construction.

The work included the installation of two areas of Sarnafil roofing fitted by Sarnafil registered contractor Boothville Roofing & Construction Limited, based in Kettering. Key to this was the installation of a green sedum roof, featuring 120sq m of Sarnafil G410-15EL membrane as part of a SarnaVert green roofing system. The bespoke green roof design by the architects, using plug plants supplied by Blackdown Horticultural Consultants, provides added insulation.

An additional 40 sq m area of leaky and uninsulated flat roof was refurbished with Sarnafil G410-12ELF membrane in Lead Grey. Together with other investments in the house’s thermal performance, the roof has helped bring about a 90 percent reduction in the owners’ energy bills. And with the Sarnafil system having been independently assessed by the BBA and certified, in its opinion, to have a life expectancy ‘in excess of’ 40 years, both areas of roof also benefit from outstanding durability and longevity.
